a non-binary rhythmic environment for at least two players
Let's take a different perspective on the concept previously discussed in the article about "an iterative rhythm environment" and delve into the world of different rhythmic ratios performed on top of a (relatively) constant rhythmic foundation.
The core idea here is that a player can use another player's rhythm as his time reference, creating new distinct rhythmic possibilities “on top”. This creates an intertwined rhythmic structure, where maybe only one musician is actually following a metronome or a conductor and the rest of the players are interdependent.
While the notation can easily appear daunting at first glance, as always it becomes manageable with practice. Try working through this concept using a looper or with your fellow musicians.
